I hope that Girardi’s impact will be somewhat minimal in the context of the entire season, but in the case of the Boston series, it may have impacted the final score significantly. Regarding Eiland, it’s difficult to judge how much impact a pitching coach has on a staff. That said, the decision making on pitch counts and usage of certain pitchers compared to what those pitchers are prepared for seems a bit off. Either Eiland is giving bad advice or Girardi is ignoring good advice. Either way, there’s a problem.

I had a lot of enthusiasm for Gerardi and Eiland. Gerardi for his reputation with young players and Eiland for the work he did in Scranton. But honestly, I agree with you, and neither may be up to the job. I hope we’re both wrong because it could be a long season.
