I'd say Damon today (or Jeter in a year) might be worth no more than $7 million/year to another team. I personally wouldn't be embarassed to earn only $7 million per year, but it may be a painful adjustment from Jeter's current $22 million or so. How many extra millions will the Yanks offer Jeter to spare him the pain or embarassement of having his income cut by 2/3? I'm guessing, not too many millions. Money is just too scarce.
