FSL All-Star Game
Minor Leagues Report — By Tom K on June 12, 2010 6:49 pmThe following players from the Yankees’ organization are on the All-Star roster for tonight’s game:
Adam Warren, a 22-year old right-handed pitcher, is the starting pitcher for the FSL North. Warren has been spectacular in 2010, compiling a 6-4 record and 2.44 ERA in 11 starts. He has thrown 59 innings, allowing 51 hits while walking 14 and striking out 46. He’s only allowed one home run and has a 2.49 GB/FB ratio. He was a 4th round pick in the 2009 draft, and although it’s only first full season of professional ball, a trip to Trenton later this year may not be completely out of the realm of possibility.
Corban Joseph (21) is the starting second baseman. So far in 2010, he has put up a .309/.378/.441 line with 15 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, and 37 RBI. He has been consistent pretty much throughout the season. The Yankees have started to produce some quality second baseman out of college programs; David Adams was flourishing in Trenton earlier this season before getting injured (He should be back soon). Joseph is a left-handed bit…with Adams’ presence, there is no need to rush him so he’ll probably finish the year in Tampa. That’s what I would do at least.
Jack Rye (24) is the starting right-fielder. Drafted in the 13th round of the 2008 draft, the left-handed hitter has put up a .293/.333/.404 line with 18 walks and 19 strikeouts in 171 at-bats. He has stolen 5 out of 6. Rye had a hot April, a slower May, and has slumped thus far in June. Obviously, his stat line doesn’t scream “All-Star” (the rosters were announced on May 28th though, and he was hitting well for most of the start of the season), and he is old for the league.
Mitchell Abeita is a 24-year old right-handed hitting catcher who has nowhere near the upside potential of guys like Jesus Montero, Austin Romine, JR Murphy, and Gary Sanchez. He isn’t having a particularly strong season for Tampa (.245/.354/.311 in 148 at-bats), though he’s been pretty good in June (.263/.462/.316). As you can see, Abeita does possess one thing that the Yankees like to emphasize: Plate discipline. He has an impressive 26 walks in 45 games. The walks have been his trademark since entering the organization as a 19th round pick in 2008 out of Nebraska. In the big leagues, finding a backup catcher with any offensive skill set can be a challenge; so it is possible that Abeita will someday turn himself into a reliable backup.
Also selected for the All-Star team was right-handed pitcher Hector Noesi…but since being selected, he’s been promoted up to Trenton. Noesi was off to a sick start in Tampa before the promotion (5-2, 2.72, 43 IP, 35 H, 6 BB, 53 K) and has started off well in Trenton as well. ================================================================================================================================================================================= There really isn’t anyone notable who didn’t make it; CF Abraham Almonte was off to a decent start before going down to injury earlier this season. Craig Heyer hasn’t allowed a walk in 35.2 innings, but is on the Temporary Inactive List. Graham Stoneburner got here too late, and Andrew Brackman was too unlucky earlier in the season to merit a spot.
