Minors Report for 6/28/10 (Eduardo Nunez; Jorge Vazquez; DJ MItchell)
Minor Leagues Report — By Tom K on June 28, 2010 10:58 pmTampa was postponed.
Scranton:
Eduardo Nunez and Jorge Vazquez both contributed three-run home runs to help lead Scranton to a 7-6 victory. Nunez went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored while Vazquez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double.
Nunez is now hitting .317/.362/.425 on the season with 18 doubles, three triples, three home runs, and 38 RBI. He is also 15-for-18 stealing bases. Vazquez doesn’t really seem to know what a walk is or how to obtain one, as he is one of those rare hitters with a higher batting average than OBP. He is at .286/.281/.536 in 14 games since joining Scranton. Eight of his 16 hits have been for extra bases, and of his 40 outs, 17 are by strikeout. It’s a home run or nothing here on Home Run Derby.
Jesus Montero went 0-for-3 with a walk and run scored. —————————————————————————————————————————————————– Trenton:
DJ Mitchell pitched seven solid innings, while Daniel Brewer went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead Trenton to a 8-2 victory.
Mitchell allowed two runs on two hits, while walking four and striking out seven. He is now 6-3 with a 4.70 ERA in 14 starts on the season (76.2 IP, 75 H, 40 BB, 55 K, 7 HR, 1.96 GB/FB) He has pretty much been up and down most of the year; though he has held steady in May & June after a terrible April (6.63 ERA in April; 4.05 in May; 4.07 in June). After walking 14 and striking out just 8 in 19 April innings, he has improved to 26 BB/47 K in 57.2 innings since.
Brewer is now hitting .244/.331/.397 with 18 doubles, two triples, six home runs, and 36 RBI. He has 20 steals in 24 attempts. The 22-year old outfielder also followed up a poor April with a good May & good June. His OPS has climbed each month (.634/.753/.776)
Austin Romine went 0-for-2 but walked three times, scored a run, and “drove in” a run. Those kind of nights will boost the OBP (.362). After drawing 14 walks in April & May, he has drawn 13 in June alone. June has been his poorest offensive month, but at least he was able to provide some walks. ————————————————————————————————————————————————— Charleston:
Deangelo Mack went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, but it wasn’t enough as Charleston got clipped, 5-4.
Mack has come back very strong after a terrible May. In May, he hit .216/.255/.258 with just five walks and 23 strikeouts. In June, he is hitting .275/.431/.471. His April line was .263/.391/.500. Mack is an intriguing left-handed hitting outfield prospect, and it is good to see that he has come back strong after such a horrendous slump.
Slade Heathcott and JR Murphy both had 0-for-4 nights. ——————————————————————————————————————————————————– Lower Minors:
Gary Sanchez went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and an RBI today for the GCL Yankees. The 17-year old catcher is only hitting .417/.481/.792 in his first 24 at-bats….24-year old pitcher Harold Garce pitched 1.1 innings and only walked one batter. Why am I reporting on a 24-year old sitting in the Gulf Coast League? I just love this number from two years ago: 37.2 IP, 84 BB, 32 K. That is not a typo. Last year, he reduced his rate to 32 walks in 47.1 innings….

TheBronxView I’m a little worried about DJ Mitchell these days.
