Minors Report for 6/30/10 (Austin Rome; Reymond Nunez)

Minor Leagues Report — By Tom K on June 30, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Not too much going on tonight, as Tampa had their double-header postponed and Charleston’s game was also postponed. I do wonder how many rainouts Tampa has this season.

Scranton: Scranton put up a fight by scoring three runs in the 9th inning, but it wasn’t enough as they took a 6-5 loss. Jesus Montero went 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Reegie Corona went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, his 11th of the season. Corona is at .234/.307/.360 now on the season and put up a .250/.312/.430 line in June.

Bad Rumolo Sanchez showed up tonight, pitching five innings and giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits. He walked four and struck out four. His ERA stands at 4.65 on the season. ——————————————————— Trenton:

Not the best of days for Andrew Brackman, but he didn’t pitch all that poorly either. Brackman allowed three runs on three hits over five innings this afternoon as Trenton took a 3-1 loss. Brackman is now 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA since joining Trenton. He has maintained his strong groundball rate, and has allowed only one home run in 10 innings. No reason for concern at this point – he’s still pitching well.

Austin Romine went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI to give himself a .290/.370/.435 line on the season. (.344/.500/.531 in his last 10 games). To show you how his plate discipline has improved a bit: His batting average is 78 points lower in June than it was in May. His OBP? 4 points lower.

29-year old lefty Wilkins Aries pitched two scoreless innings in relief. I haven’t reported anything on Aries this year (mostly because he is a 29-year old in AA), but he is 3-1 with a 2.87 ERA in 33 games for Trenton this year (37.2 IP, 34 H, 2 HR, 16 BB, 37 K). He has held lefties to a .182 batting average. —————————————————————- Lower minors:

19-year old first baseman Reymond Nunez went 2-for-4 with an RBI today and is now 11-for-33 with three doubles, two home runs, and 12 RBI. An international signing in 2007, Nunez put up a nice .296/.375/.493 line for the DSL Yankees in 2009, earning him a promotion to the states…20-year old right-hander Michael O’Brien, drafted in the 9th round of the 2008 draft, pitched 5.1 impressive innings for Staten Island tonight, allowing one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out five. So far, he is 3-0 in three starts for Staten Island with a 0.98 ERA (18.1 IP, 14 H, 3 BB, 13 K). O’Brien has been at the GCL level the last two seasons (well, really just last year – in 2008, he just got his feet wet with a few late-season innings). In 2009, he went 2-4 with a 5.09 ERA, striking out 44 in 46 innings while walking only nine. Throws in the low-90s with good command of his breaking pitches, but does fall pray to the “undersized righty” thing that tends to cause pitchers to fall in the draft. He also is a diabetic….Jose Mojica had two more hits for Staten Island and is up to .378 on the season in 45 at-bats….
