Minor Leagues Report — By on July 2, 2010 10:22 pm

Scranton:

David Phelps’ first start for Scranton went about as poorly as any start he’s had in his professional career.

Phelps lasted 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits as Scranton too a 5-1 loss. Phelps didn’t walk a batter and struck out four.

Juan Miranda hit his 7th home run of the season to account for Scranton’s lone run. It was Miranda’s first game played since June 18th. —————————————————– Trenton:

Lance Pendleton continued his solid pitching, allowing one run five hits over six innings as Trenton cruised to a 7-2 victory. Pendleton walked two and struck out seven. On the season, he is 7-3 with a 3.54 ERA over 16 games (15 starts). In 86.1 innings, he has allowed 73 hits while walking 35 and striking out 78.

Brandon Laird contributed a hit and his 80th RBI of the season, while Austin Krum connected for a home run, his fifth of the season ————————————————————- Tampa:

After not playing for what seemed like months, they finally got on the field today for a double-header.

In Game 1, Corban Joseph went 2-for-5 with a double, home run, two RBI and two walks to help Tampa take a 4-3 decision in 14 innings. Bradley Suttle ended the game in the 14th with a home run.

On the hill, Manny Banuelos finally got to pitch for Tampa. He lasted 3.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits. He walked two and struck out four. George Kontos went 1.2 of scorleless relief, while Sergio Mitre made his first rehab appearance, throwing a scoreless inning of his own.

In Game 2, it was all about Dellin Betances, who is probably the biggest pitching prospect they have right now. Betances went five innings in this one, allowing one run on two hits. He walked two and struck out six. Betances is now 3-0 in five starts with a 0.64 ERA (28 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 33 K). Please stay healthy, Dellin.

Corban Joseph went just 0-for-1 in Game 2, drawing two walks and driving in a run. He is hitting .313 on the season with 24 doubles, one triple, five home runs, 38 runs scored and 44 RBI. —————————————————————————— Charleston:

Deangelo Mack hit his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the 9th that lead Charleston to a 5-3 victory. Mack is hitting .244/.342/.406 on the season in 234 at-bats. He has 14 doubles and three triples. Mack is coming off of a strong month of June (.259/.412/.481) and has been generally solid other than his awful May numbers.

Third baseman Robert Lyerly went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win. Lyerly (22) put up quite the impressive stat-line in June (.388/.424/.500) and has been generally solid for most of the season, hitting .313 with 23 doubles, only one home run, and 34 RBI. He was a 6th round pick in the 2009 draft.

On the hill, 20-year old right-hander Jose Ramirez went six innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out five. In 15 starts, he is only 2-4…but with a 3.42 ERA (81.2 IP, 72 H, 26 BB, 72 K, 0 HR). Ramirez throws hard (he can hit 96 on the gun) with a solid changeup and a developing slurvy breaking pitch. Supposedly, he throws with a very quiet motion, giving his fastball a bit of that “jumps at you” feel. Regardless, if he can develop that breaking pitch, he has a chance to be a major pitching prospect – if he doesn’t, he’ll either shift to the pen or be a primarily two pitch starter with a third “show me” pitch. He’s only 20, so there is time. —————————————————————— Lower Minors: Only two hits for the GCL squad as they lost, 5-0….19-year old center fielder Eduardo Sosa went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base in Staten Island’s 2-1 victory. He is now 12-for-48 on the season with four doubles, one triple, one home run, and five RBI. He is 3-for-3 stealing bases….Righty Manuel Barreda (21, 12th rounder in 2007) went two hitless innings, though he did walk four while striking out two. He underwent arm surgery in 2008, and came back to pitch in 15 games last season, going 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA (26 IP, 11 H, 11 BB, 27 K).
