Minors Report for 7/15/10 (Jesus-Bino!; Eduardo Nunez; Andrew Brackman; Jimmy Paredes)
Minor Leagues Report — By Tom K on July 15, 2010 10:19 pmScranton:
Scranton came out of the All-Star Break swinging the lumber, pounded out 12 runs on 16 hits in a 12-5 victory.
Jesus Montero went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored in the win. He also drew a walk. Montero is now hitting .259 on the season with 19 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, and 39 RBI. He now has 34 walks on the season and 57 strikeouts in 286 at-bats. His slugging percentage sits at .430.
Eduardo Nunez contributed three hits, including two doubles, and a run batted in to the cause. Nunez is up to .309/.357/.413 on the season.
Jorge Vazquez went 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Reegie Corona went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
The starting pitcher was Sergio Mitre, who is likely very close to being back in a Yankees’ uniform. —————————————————- Trenton:
Andrew Brackman went back to his roots tonight – which means he did two things very well and one thing not so well. Brackman went five innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits to earn his first Double-A victory as Trenton took a 3-2 decision. Brackman did walk four in this game, but also struck out five. He also induced seven groundouts to just one flyout.
Since joining Trenton, Brackman is 1-4 in five starts with a 4.56 ERA. In 25.2 innings, he has allowed 27 hits while walking 11 and striking out 23. The walks are obviously spiking from his time in Tampa this year (he only had nine walks in 60 innings in High-A). Could be a combination of his mechanics being a bit out of whack and better hitters. Regardless, this has been a very encouraging season for Brackman, and hopefully this is the start of good things as he heads down the stretch.
George Kontos threw three scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit. He walked nobody and struck out four.
Offensively, other than a little single by Brandon Laird, no prospect of significance contributed much in this game. ——————————————————— Tampa:
Corban Joseph once again put up a nice night as Tampa needed 11 innings to take a 7-5 victory.
Joseph went 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored to lead the charge. For added measure, he also stole his 4th base of the season. Joseph is having a big season: .312/.382/.460 with 26 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 46 RBI. Of course, the 4th stolen base is nice and all…but he’s Robinson Cano on the basepaths. He should never really be stealing, as he has been caught seven times. In his minor league career, he has stolen 14 out of 31 attempts. Eeeeek.
21-year old shortstop Jose Pirela went 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored. His slash now stands at .235/.315/.344. He is hitting .317/.417/.488 in his last ten games; and put up a .289/.375/.458 line in 83 June at-bats.
In the worst news of the night, Craig Heyer finally allowed his first walk of the entire season. He now has a 34.00 K/BB ratio in 43.2 innings pitched. ——————————————————– Charleston:
I’ve never seen Jimmy Paredes play…but something tells me he must be a lot of fun to watch. Paredes went 2-for-3 with two triples, three RBI, a walk, and his 32nd stolen base of the season to help lead Charleston to a 6-5 victory. Paredes is hitting .293/.323/.428 with 20 doubles, six triples, five home runs, and 39 RBI. He has stolen those 32 bases in 41 attempts. Signed in 2006, Paredes OPS keeps climbing as he climbs the ladder: .652 for the DSL team in 2007; .706 for the GCL squad in 2008; .746 for Staten Island in 2009; and now .752 for Charleston in 2010. He is a switch-hitter who shows promise from both sides of the plate (.760 OPS batting righty; .749 batting lefty.) Believe it or not, despite those nice speed numbers, Paredes is maybe seen more for his power potential. His speed doesn’t rate as excellent; he is more “quick” than he is “fast”. But if he develops his power game, he could blossom quickly as a prospect. Of course as he blossoms, he probably won’t play as much shortstop and may need to be switched to second (or more likely, third base) full-time.
Deangelo Mack went 2-for-4 with a double (.252/.341/.422) in the victory.
21-year old righty Francisco Gil earned his fourth save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth. He has a 1.35 ERA on the season (20 IP, 23 H, 2 BB, 13 K, 0 HR). ————————————————— Lower Minors: Gary Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI as the GCL squad took a loss. Sanchez has slumped down to .378/.455/.622 in 74 at-bats….19-year old lefty Juan Marcano pitched four scoreless innings in this game. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two. Marcano spent a brief period up with the Tampa squad a few weeks back and has thrown 13 scoreless innings to start his season (3 H, 4 BB, 11 K)….
