Minor Leagues Report — By on July 19, 2010 10:52 pm

Charleston & Staten Island had the night off.

Scranton:

Sergio Mitre threw his final rehab game before Saturday’s start.
Mitre went 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four as Scranton took a 6-2 defeat.    On the big-time plus side, all ten of the non strikeouts were ground outs.

Jesus Montero went 3-for-3 in this game with a double and a walk.   Remarkably, Montero is now hitting .267/.341/.437 in 300 at-bats.    He is hitting .412 in his last ten games; and .364/.482/.568 in 44 July at-bats (following his .283/.324/.505 June).     The hitting machine that everyone has been waiting for is starting to get itself going.  This could get very interesting if he keeps this up through July.

Jorge Vazquez added his eighth home run, a two-run shot that accounted for both Scranton runs.    He also drew his very first unintentional walk for Scranton.

Trenton:

Austin Romine drove in a pair of runs, while Lance Pendleton threw six one-hit innings to lead Trenton to a 6-0 victory.
Romine went 1-for-3 with a double, while Brandon Laird contributed a couple of hits to the cause.  He is up to .279/.353/.418 in 294 at-bats.

Pendleton walked four and struck out five to improve his season’s record to 8-4.   He has a 3.73 ERA in 20 games (19 starts).   As I have stated many times, he’s now pretty close to being a non-prospect.   But he is the type of pitcher who may make a major league bullpen.    At 26 years old, he needs to make his move soon.

Ryan Pope added a scoreless inning, striking out one.   Pope has a 4.27 ERA in 26 games this season; but it sits at 3.38 with a 37-8 K-BB ratio since moving to the bullpen.

Tampa:

Graham Stoneburner threw a strong game tonight as Tampa cruised to an 11-4 victory over Bradenton.
Stoneburner went 5.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits.  He walked one and struck out eight in improving his record with Tampa to 5-4.     In 11 starts, he has a 2.54 ERA over 60.1 innings.  He has allowed 39 hits, while walking 14 and striking out 58.   Overall on the season, he is 6-7 with a 2.36 ERA in 18 starts.  (99.1 IP, 66 H, 24 BB, 102 K, 5 HR, 1.88 GO/AO).

Corban Joseph went 3-for-3 with two RBI to improve his slash to .313/.386/.457 in 335 at-bats.   He has 26 doubles, two triples, six home runs, and 49 RBI on the year.

Melky Mesa went 1-for-4 with his fifth triple, while Bradley Suttle added a single, double, and four RBI to the winning effort.   Suttle is hitting .255/.316/.361 on the season.

Lower Minors:

Anderson Felix went 2-for-4 with a double to raise his average to .265 for the GCL Yankees.  The 18-year old second baseman has 10 extra-base hits in 102 at-bats….Cito Culver went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.   He is at a respectable .250/.325/.319 overall, and has hit safely in five of his last six games….
