Minors Report for 7/21/10 (Even More Jesus Montero!; Andrew Brackman; Manny Banuelos; Jose Pirela; Deangelo Mack; Slade Heathcott)

Minor Leagues Report — By on July 21, 2010 9:11 pm

Scranton:

Jesus Montero went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI, and a walk but it wasn’t enough as Scranton had trouble scoring in a 3-1 loss.

Montero is now up to .278 on the season.   He is 16 for his last 33, and 21-for-50 in July with eight extra base hits.     Since the AAA All-Star Break, he is a cool 14-for-24.   I can go on and on.

Eduardo Nunez contributed a hit and a run scored (.304) to the losing effort, while Kevin Russo went 2-for-4.

Rumolo Sanchez was the loser, giving up two runs in the ninth.   He walked one and struck out one and is now 7-8 overall on the season with a 4.43 ERA.  (87.1 IP, 75 H, 52 BB, 75 K, 7 HR)

Trenton:

Andrew Brackman threw five impressive innings, but then started to melt down a bit in the sixth as Trenton lost, 4-2.

Brackman ended up going 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits.  He walked two and struck out seven.    Of his ten non-strikeouts, seven were ground outs.
Since joining Trenton, Brackman is now 1-5 with a 4.31 ERA in six starts. (31.1 IP, 36 H, 13 BB, 30 K, 2 HR, 1.19 GO/AO).    Overall, he is 6-9 in 18 starts with a 4.83 ERA (91.1 IP, 103 H, 22 BB, 86 K, 7 HR, 1.55 GO/AO).

Marcos Vechionacci had two hits in the losing effort to raise his line to .297/.371/.446.    He hasn’t been great since his huge June, but he hasn’t collapsed either.  He has 12 hits in his last 36 at-bats and is at .279 in July.

Tampa:

Manny Banuelos pitched well, but not well enough as Tampa also had a tough time scoring tonight in a 3-1 loss.

Banuelos went five innings, allowing three unearned runs on five hits.  He walked three and struck out ten.    In five starts for Tampa, the 19-year old lefty is 0-1 with a 1.16 ERA (23.1 IP, 18 H, 1 HR, 8 BB, 33 K, 1.00 GO/AO).    That strikeout rate is quite impressive for a 19-year old in High-A ball.

Shortstop Jose Pirela (20) had two more hits to give himself a ten-game hitting streak (17-for-40, .425) and an overall line of .249/.328/.362 in 334 at-bats.     As stated previously, he hit very well at the age of 19 in Charleston last year…so keep him in the back of your mind as another potential infield prospect in this system.

Zolio Almonte & Melky Mesa each contributed a hit, while Corban Joseph went 0-for-2 with two walks.  (.309/.386/.450)

Charleston:

Deangelo Mack hit a tie-breaking 10th inning home run to lead Charleston to a 5-4 victory.
Mack went 1-for-2 on the night with the home run (his 10th of the season) and three walks.    He is now hitting .252 in 298 at-bats with 16 doubles, four triples, ten home runs, and 38 RBI.  He has walked 39 times while striking out 69 times.

Slade Heathcott went 2-for-5 with a double and now has four multi-hit games in his last five.    The power still isn’t there (just one home run – an inside-the-park homer at that), but he is hitting .282 while playing in a league that the Yankees didn’t plan to use him in for all of 2010.   Not bad.

Kyle Higashioka went 2-for-4 to give him eight hits in his last three games (and get his average over .220), while Jimmy Paredes went 1-for-4 with his 33rd stolen base.

Brett Marshall started and went six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits.  He walked one and struck out seven.   In five starts, he is 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA (28 IP, 24 H, 10 BB, 25 K)

21-year old righty Francisco Gil saved his fifth game of the season with a scoreless tenth inning.

Lower Minors:

Lefty Juan Marcano (19) pitched four scoreless innings of relief to earn himself a Goose Gossage save for the GCL Yankees.  He allowed one hit, walked nobody, and struck out two.  He has thrown 12 scoreless innings for the GCL squad after throwing five scoreless innings earlier this season for Tampa in the FSL.   His overall line reads like this:   17 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 13 K….21st round pick Conor Mullee threw three scoreless innings in relief for the win.   Mullee played mostly shortstop during his collegiate career, but the Yankees want him to concentrate on pitching only.   He is 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA for the GCL squad.  In 17 innings, he has allowed 16 hits while walking four and striking out 14….
