Minor Leagues Report — By on July 23, 2010 9:53 pm

Scranton:

Eduardo Nunez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, but Kei Igawa got knocked around in relief as Scranton took a 5-4 loss.

Reegie Corona went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, while Chad Tracy connected on his fifth home run.   His five home runs have come in 42 at-bats for Scranton.

David Phelps made the start, and put up a rare not-so-good game.  Phelps went five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits.  He walked three and struck out three.
In four starts for Scranton, he is 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA (22.2 IP, 28 H, 3 BB, 22 K, 0 HR)

Trenton:

Brandon Laird went 2-for-4 with a double, solo home run, and three runs scored to lead Trenton to a 8-3 victory.
Laird’s home run was his 21st, and has now hit home runs in back to back games.     Not a bad season for a 27th round pick out of Cypress College.

Daniel Brewer went 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored.

DJ Mitchell pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits.  He walked nobody and struck out seven in improving his record to 8-4.   In 18 starts, he has a 4.60 ERA (101.2 IP, 103 H, 48 BB, 70 K, 8 HR).     Mitchell has been pitching well as of late.  In his last five starts, he is 3-1 with a 3.94 ERA.   In 32 IP, he has allowed 30 hits while walking 12 and striking out 22.

George Kontos closed the game with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while walking one and striking out one.  He

Tampa:

Shaeffer Hall surely wasn’t great, but he tricked his way through five shutout innings in a 3-0 victory.     In those five innings, he allowed three hits and three walk and didn’t strike out anybody.  However, if you get grounders, you can survive nights like this.  Hall induced 10 grounders to five flyouts in this start.    For Tampa, Hall is 7-1 with a 2.35 ERA.  In 38.1 IP, he has allowed 38 hits while walking seven and striking out 31.  He also has a 2.07 GO/AO ratio, which is nice to see for a pitcher without overpowering stuff.

Zolio Almonte went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run, and an RBI in the win.     He is at .247/.312/.299 for Tampa and .269/.332/.429 in 324 at-bats overall.

Scranton:

Sean Black pitched well, but Charleston couldn’t get on the scoreboard in a 1-0 defeat.
Black went seven innings, allowing one run on four hits.  He walked two and struck out eight.     Black may be starting to turn his season around; he is now 4-7 with a 4.29 ERA overall (92.1 IP, 95 H, 35 BB, 71 K, 5 HR, 1.35 GO/AO).    He has allowed three earned runs in his last 19 innings.

Jimmy Paredes had a hit and stolen base (34) in the loss.

Lower Minors:

Staten Island scored seven runs tonight, but gave up 12 in a loss.   Shane Brown hit his second home run of the year and drove in four in the loss.  The 22-year old outfielder out of Central Florida is only hitting .208…but has 19 walks in 22 games to keep his OBP around the .400 mark…..Garrison Lassiter (20, IF) went 2-for-4 in the loss.   Lassiter is hitting .319/.396/.383 in 47 at-bats for Staten Island; earlier in the season, he went 9-for-88 in Charleston.  That is not a typo – .102 was his batting average when the Yankees decided that perhaps a full-season league was not for him this year….Anderson Felix hit his second home run of the season in the GCL Yankees’ 13-7 victory.    Only in the GCL can you commit six errors in one game and win by six.  Of course, the Braves’ squad committed three errors of their own.    Cito Culver went 2-for-5 in this game with a run scored and an RBI….19-year old outfielder Henry Pena contributed a 2-for-5 day with two doubles and two runs scored.  He is hitting .339/.397/.548 in 62 at-bats.    He hit .315/.436/.492 in 197 at-bats for the DSL-2 squad last year….
