Minors Report for 8/31/10 (Austin Romine; Daniel Brewer; Slade Heathcott; JR Murphy)

Minor Leagues Report — By on August 31, 2010 10:34 pm

Scranton:

Not much to write about tonight for Scranton, as they were only able to produce four hits in a 6-0 loss.

Jesus Montero went 1-for-4, while Kevin Russo went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Montero’s slugging percentage dipped below .500 as his line now reads .284/.352/.495.

That’s it. Lance Pendleton started, and didn’t throw well (6 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K). He is now 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA for Scranton. —————————– Trenton:

Good news: The offense was able to produce 12 hits. Bad news: Those hits weren’t enough as they got crushed, 10-4.

Austin Romine is hitting a bit better now. He went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. He is on a mini 5-game hitting streak and is 13 for his last 44 (.295). His total line is .267/.324/.391.

Daniel Brewer went 3-for-3 with a two runs, an RBI, his 28th stolen base, and a walk. He is now hitting .268 on the season, and will be a fun player for Zod to watch up in Scranton in 2011. He is hitting .267/.345/.404 with 32 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 76 RBI and 28 steals in 38 attempts.

Cory Abriso gave up 13 hits in four innings to take the loss. He allowed 10 runs (nine earned) while walking three and striking out three. That’s the type of pounding minor league managers don’t typically allow their guys to take. He is 5-4 with a 4.37 ERA for Trenton in 31 games (10 starts). ————————————— Tampa:

A 6-5 win in 10 innings tonight for Tampa.

The star of the game was Trent Lockwood, who went 3-for-5 with a double, home run, and four runs batted in. Lockwood is 24 and is nothing more than organization filler, really – but always nice to report on some of the “other” guys that filter in and out of the system.

Bradley Suttle went 1-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base in the win. Suttle is having a nice season, but will hit Trenton at the age of 25 next season. A strong campaign there could put him back into the prospect picture.

Preston Claiborne went two shutout innings, allowing a hit. He has a 3.38 ERA since joining Tampa (5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 5 K). Overall, he has thrown 29 innings, allowing 11 runs (eight earned) on 24 hits. He has walked 11 and struck out 35. Jonathan Ortiz earned the win in relief and is now 7-1 with a 2.35 ERA (53.2 IP, 39 H, 11 BB, 59 K for the 24-year old righty). With all of the talk surrounding Venditte, Ortiz gets lost in the shuffle a bit; he isn’t much of a prospect – relies more on deception than power…but then again, so does Venditte. ———————————————- Charleston:

A 10-7 slugfest loss for the Riverdogs tonight.

Slade Heathcott went 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base (14), and two runs batted in, while Ramon Flores went 2-for-5 with a run batted in.

JR Murphy took two more walks tonight, and has taken 14 walks in his last nine games. Kevin Mahoney contributed a pair of hits, a pair of runs scored, and a walk to the losing effort. —————————————– Staten Island:

Staten Island won the completion of a suspended game, but then lost the regularly scheduled game, 3-0.

Rob Segedin went 1-for-2 with a walk and is hitting .250 (12-for-48) since joining Staten Island. In those 48 at-bats, he has only struck out four times. Cito Culver went 0-for-2 with a walk and is only hitting .118 (4-for-34). Gary Sanchez went 0-for-3 and is 9-for-38 since joining the squad.

Lefty Kramer Sneed struck out eight in 4.2 innings in the losing effort. He allowed two runs (none earned) on three hits. He is 1-3 with a 4.55 ERA (27.2 IP, 31 H, 5 BB, 38 K). That is a very strong K rate for the 22-year old drafted in this year’s draft.
