Minors Report for 9/6/10 (Montero Goes Yard; Hector Noesi; Andrew Brackman; Austin Romine; Robert Lyelry; Shane Greene)

Minor Leagues Report — By on September 6, 2010 7:46 pm

Scranton:

It wasn’t a great day for Jesus Montero, but the one hit he was able to compile was his 21st home run of the season (a solo shot) as Scranton took a 4-3 decision in 12 innings. Montero is at .289 with 34 doubles, three triples, 21 home runs, and 75 RBI. He has a .517 slugging percentage.

Jorge Vazquez hit his 18th home run of the season in the victory. Brandon Laird contributed a double and a run batted in.

Hector Noesi made the start, and pitched a strong game. He went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out six. For Scranton, he is 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA in three starts (18.2 IP, 23 H, 4 BB, 14 K). Overall, he is 1-47 with a 3.20 ERA in 28 games (27 starts). He has thrown 160.1 innings, allowing 148 hits. He walked 28 and struck out 153. Like Phelps, Noesi has pretty much thrown enough innings to the point that whenever he is needed in the big leagues, he should be good to go. —————————– Trenton:

Andrew Brackman tossed five shutout innings while Austin Romine continued his recent stretch of good hitting with a double, home run, and two runs batted in as Trenton took a 5-2 decision.

Brackman allowed two hits, walked nobody, and struck out three. He is 5-7 with a 3.01 ERA for Trenton (80.2 IP, 77 H, 30 BB, 70 K, 3 HR) and 10-11 with a 3.90 ERA overall (140.2 IP, 144 H, 39 BB, 126 K, 8 HR). In his last ten starts, he is 4-3 with a 2.29 ERA (55 IP, 50 H, 19 BB, 47 K). Not even the most optimistic fan could have expected Brackman to throw this well this year – keeping the walks down, the ground ball rate up (1.65 GO/AO) while maintaining a strong strikeout rate. Very encouraging season.

Romine is at .268/.324/.402 on the season and is 14 for his last 43. After a horrendous slump in the middle of the season, any signs of life are going to be seen as encouraging.

Corban Joseph tripled in a run, while Daniel Brewer doubled and scored a run in the win.

Ryan Pope tossed an inning, giving up a solo home run while striking out two. He is 4-6 with 4.20 ERA overall on the season (94.1 IP, 88 H, 31 BB, 85 K, 10 HR) but has posted a 3.61 ERA as a reliever (57.1 IP, 50 H, 14 BB, 62 K, 6 HR). ————————————— Tampa:

Season over. Playoffs start on Tuesday. ————————————— Charleston:

Slade Heathcott hit a game-tying, two-out double in the bottom of the 10th…followed by a game-winning RBI single by Robert Lyerly as Charleston took a 2-1 decision.

Lyerly had three hits on the day to raise his average to .312 with 36 doubles, seven home runs, and 71 runs batted in. The 23-year old left-handed hitter entered the day fourth in the league in hitting.

21-year old right-hander Shane Greene threw six shutout innings, allowing two hits while walking two and striking out eight. In four starts with Charleston, he is 0-2 with a 4.68 ERA (19.2 IP, 14 H, 8 BB, 22 K, 1 HR). Overall, he is 2-8 with a 4.59 ERA (68.2 IP, 71 H, 29 BB, 66 K). Greene was a 15th round pick in the 2009 draft. Earlier this season, the Yankees decided to work on a few mechanical adjustments with Greene’s delivery, and the results have been pretty good overall since then. But he is a long ways away from being on the prospect radar.

Season over. No playoffs.
