Minor Leagues Report — By Tom K on March 15, 2017 10:21 pm
The Yankees have cut several more players from camp:
P Domingo German – I haven't heard much of anything about him this spring. Had no chance to make the roster regardless, and is likely heading down to Tampa to begin the year, but it would be a disappointment if he didn't get to Trenton at some point.
P Ronald Herrera – Had a strong season in the minors last year (after being acquired for Jose Pirela!) He will likely start the year in Triple-A, though further down the depth chart than the likes of Jordan Montgomery.
P Yefrey Ramirez – Talk about a nice little journey. Ramirez was a minor league phase Rule 5 draft pick prior to 2016, and ended up pitching so well in the minors that the Yankees added him to the 40-man over the winter. He did throw in a few preseason games. I assume he is going down to High-A, though he did make 11 starts there last year.
P Chance Adams – Adams was one of the "buzz" prospects last year. The Yankees moved him into the rotation from the bullpen, and he dominated. He can come quickly, and is probably a good candidate to get his feet wet in an MLB bullpen. He has plenty of relief experience, so it won't be foreign territory.
P Johnny Barbato – In 2016, he impressed so much in spring training that he made the team out of spring training. He started the season red hot, making you believe the Yankees had more than just Chapman-Miller-Betances. Alas, he flamed out. He should be firmly on the shuttle this season, filling in whenever the Yankees need an arm.
P Dietrich Enns – Probably had an outside shot at a bullpen job this spring, but the Yankees probably want him to continue to get reps as a starter. They can use Jonathan Niese for the role that Enns would have been used for.
P Giovanny Gallegos – A surprise entry on the 40-man roster prior to the Rule 5 draft. The Yankees likely thought he was going to jump right into the bullpen competition, but he struggled this spring.
3B Miguel Andujar – Andujar, of course, had zero chance to make the roster and was here just to get his feet wet in major league camp. Depending on how he does in 2017, he can make his case for some playing time in the show next year. As is, he is a September call-up candidate.
